Case Study: HiPP

To advance the decarbonization of its own supply chain (Scope 3), HiPP uses THE CLIMATE CHOICE’s Climate Intelligence Platform to collect and manage climate-relevant supplier data.

Stefan Hipp

About the company

For over 60 years, the name HiPP has stood for organic farming and sustainable values. Today, with Stefan and Sebastian Hipp, the fourth generation is responsible for 3,200 employees worldwide and a product portfolio with over 400 different articles in the areas of baby and toddler nutrition, pregnancy and baby care, diapers, and tube feeding. Group turnover is around 1 billion euros.

Goals of HiPP

HiPP has already been able to reduce CO2 emissions by around 90% over the past 14 years through the consistent use of renewable energies. The company plans to determine and reduce the climate footprint of all HiPP product and company divisions by 2025 and to compensate for unavoidable emissions. On the way to becoming a climate-positive company, the main aim is to identify and exploit further CO2 savings potential along the value chain.

Climate Ready Supply Chain

The challenges of decarbonizing Scope 3

To achieve its goal of a low-emission supply chain, HiPP faces the challenge of successfully integrating its suppliers into its own decarbonization strategy. This in turn is only possible on the basis of detailed and comparable information about the climate maturity of individual suppliers. So how can high-quality climate data be collected from suppliers on a big scale?

Standardized data collection via the Climate Intelligence Platform

The right solution was found with THE CLIMATE CHOICE software tool: The Climate Intelligence Platform provides a structured and scalable process for collecting and managing climate-related supplier data. Based on the collected data, the specialized SaaS tool provides information and guidance for supplier engagement in climate strategy and reduction targets.

Project overview

1. Analysis

THE CLIMATE CHOICE uses its software platform to collect climate-relevant data from selected HiPP suppliers such as packaging manufacturers.

2. Engagement

Suppliers receive reports, key benchmarks and analysis on their climate risks and opportunities.

3. Decarbonization

The primary data collected serves as the basis for HiPP’s ambitious reduction plan in Scope 3.

Result

With the help of THE CLIMATE CHOICE software tool, HiPP was able to develop a transparent, scalable process for collecting comparable data on the climate maturity of selected suppliers. With the help of the Climate Performance Assessment, climate-related risks and potentials of five HiPP suppliers were successfully identified and presented comparatively in the form of climate scorecards.

This showed that the categories of impact model, leadership and transparency were very well fulfilled by the majority of suppliers. There is still particular potential in the areas of climate performance and climate actions.

“The supply of raw materials as an essential part of our business model requires the assessment of environmental and especially climate impacts of the upstream supply chain. The software tool from THE CLIMATE CHOICE offers the ideal solution for this and enables us to implement a scalable and reliable process to increase the climate-relevant transparency of our supply chain. On this data basis, we can make our ambitious climate targets in Scope 3 visible together with our suppliers and jointly drive them forward.”

Next Steps

The aim is to extend software-driven climate data collection initially to other partners and ultimately to HiPP’s supply chain. Through an integration of THE CLIMATE CHOICE software tool into HiPP’s sustainability and procurement strategy, the full potential of climate-relevant supplier management is to be exploited.
